Rules of Reversi (Othello)
Reversi (also known as Othello) is a strategic board game played by two players.
A typical Reversi board consists of an 8×8 grid.
Players take turns placing black and white discs on the squares of the board.
The objective of the game is to convert your opponent’s discs to your color on the board.
This is done by placing a disc so that one or more of your opponent’s discs are trapped in a straight line between the new disc and another disc of your color.
All trapped discs are flipped to your color.
Reversi is a game that requires strategy in choosing where and when to place discs, as well as how to arrange them on the board.
Although the rules are relatively simple for beginners, the game also involves deep strategy, making it enjoyable for advanced players as well.
Board
The board usually consists of an 8×8 grid.
At the start of the game, four discs are placed in the center of the board, arranged alternately in black and white.
Turn Order
Black moves first.
Black and White take turns making moves.
On each turn, a player places one disc of their color on the board.
If a player has no valid move, they must pass their turn.
Placing Discs
A disc can only be placed on a square where it will trap one or more of the opponent’s discs.
Discs can be trapped in any of the eight directions: horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.
All opponent’s discs trapped by the newly placed disc are flipped to the player’s color.
A disc cannot be placed on a square where no opponent’s discs are trapped.
End of the Game
The game ends when the board is completely filled with discs.
When the game ends, the player with the greater number of discs wins.
If both players have the same number of discs, the game is a draw.
The game also ends if both players must pass consecutively.
